Comic Book Review: The Plot
The Plot is one of my most anticipated titles this year. Between the creative team, the story and overall aesthetic? How could anyone resist? Mackenzie and Zach are siblings recently orphaned after the mysterious death of their parents. The two are left under the care of their wayward Uncle Chase, and the three head to an old, abandoned family mansion in a bid to get some space…why wouldn’t you?
The Plot thickens…
With talent like this on board, it was hard to go wrong with The Plot. As a result of this stellar team, everything sits exactly as it should. The art style, lettering, and colouring is reminiscent of the classics, and Moreci and Daniel navigate their way through a host of horror tropes with ease and a fresh eye. A horror story set in New England is far from new. In fact, it has been done a few times with relative success (I think the guy was called Stephen King, or something? He wrote some books…), but The Plot doesn’t shy away from its roots. Instead, it embraces them with full, terrifying force.
Thanks to its extensive reference material, The Plot effortlessly transports us into a world that feels familiar, but one in which we know we should not get too comfortable. We know the characters, and we know the dangers, and we can’t help but get sucked in. Full of subtleties and sledgehammer reveals, The Plot has rapidly become the new benchmark for horror comics.
Scary Stories to tell in the dark
Boyd’s colour palette and Campbell’s superb lettering take The Plot from a good horror to a great one. Their work over Hixon’s gorgeously Gothic illustration, with Daniel and Moreci’s careful words create the perfect ambience for a horror comic. The creeping dread and disquiet builds with every page, and we finish on the most beautifully illustrated, delectably haunting cliffhanger. The Plot leaves you asking questions and wanting more…even if you are too scared to ask.
