Who is Cuddles?

Cuddles, has a pretty sweet life, he’s collecting debts for a local crime boss and whilst feared he is also well respected. However, not all is as it seems. He discovers his partner Jacko has been skimming off the top. Not only that, but Jacko, is the son of their crime boss. If that wasn’t bad enough, a pair of FBI agents are sniffing around. Cuddles‘ life is about to get very complicated.

Described as a noir crime on-shot, Cuddles is split into neat chapters and is both engaging and compelling from beginning to end.

A wild ride

Admittedly, I had no idea what to expect going into Cuddles. But the story and the characters are set up quickly and comprehensively. Within just a few pages, I felt like I had a good sense of who Cuddles was. He’s got a rugged charm that is balanced a no-nonsense set of morals. Morals that arguable related to being a criminal, but morals nonetheless.

Subtle and well-paced

McPherson’s writing is subtle, Cuddles doesn’t blaze through pages, it is quite slow-paced. But, that’s not to its detriment. The slow, steady facing keeps you guessing what will unfold next and keeps you eagerly turning pages.

The visuals give Cuddles a really striking and memorable look. Perugini’s design of Cuddles is so well matched in tone with how McPherson wrote him.  He captures that rough around the edges ‘mountain of a man’ kind of character.

Bennion’s colours are the icing on the cake of this delicious puply-crime cake. The smaller details of Perugini’s art are accented beautifully. The colours and tones really being the word together.

Stylish, entertaining and accomplished

Cuddles, is compared to by the creators as things like The Nice Guys and Drive. They are absolutely right. It is incredibly stylish, perfectly paces and an all-round entertaining read. It is ideal for mature readers who like crime stories with complex plotlines and complimenting visuals.
