Divided Kingdom of Hearts

Divided Kingdom tells the story of a fractured and fraught Britain, twenty-five years into the future. A violent and tyrannical billionaire presides over the remnants of this society, however, there are some who will no longer stand for this dictatorship, whatever the cost.

Thy Divided Kingdom Come

Divided Kingdom is a commentary that rings loud and clear as an indictment of the path we are on. About this, there is no doubt. Illustrated predominantly in greyscale, quiet leaks of colour work well until we get the visceral, red pay-off as the story progresses.

In contrast to the space-bound HQ of the new Britcorp, we see snippets of the banality of office life. Illustrated through gossipy kitchen conversations and desk vestibules, the drone-like systems of the future feel all too familiar. The art, too, ushers us into the uncanny valley. Stylised in a way reminiscent of H R Geiger and Brett Helquist, the sketchy panels sit once more in another contrast to the sharp, clean, almost clinical bubbles and lettering. In creating these contrasts, each element comes together to cloak the story in disquiet – which I suppose is the point.

We are supposed to feel uncomfortable with the way life has gone. We aren’t meant to be okay with this, and Divided Kingdom reminds us of this.

Where There’s a Rebel, There’s a Way

An interesting piece of work, Divided Kingdom does well not to shy away from the terrifying portrayal of a future not too distant. That is to say that is is as bleak as it needs to be, and it makes us question everything we need to question. Even after we are done, we are left wondering. Let us all hope we do not become a kingdom divided.
