Glorified Issue 1 Review

Glorified Issue 1: Eye of the Needle

Co-writers Brian Tashima, Kyle Gilbert, Daniel Downs

Artist: Jenny Ho

What is Glorified?

Glorified is a brand new, Manga styled comic book series, set in a post-apocalyptic world. It tells the story of Gloria Sin. She is raised to be the best soldier of her generation. Nevertheless, she ends up fleeing her oppressive hometown. Gloria reluctantly helps people as she traverses a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of answers about her past.

I read the first issue, and let me say, I’m intrigued! Gloria’s world is an interesting one – filled with tech and the mysterious Matriarch. The Matriarch demands that soldiers wounded in battle must sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

This first issue sets up a lot of questions – who is the Matriarch and why must soldiers sacrifice themselves. More importantly, what is Gloria going to do now? As a result, I’m certainly interested in finding out more.

The Matriach

I also enjoyed the manga-esque art style. Though, I have to give warning, due to gore and blood
on several panels. It is clear the inspirations for the tale includes Mad Max: Fury Road, John Wick and Atila Battle Angel.

About the author

Glorified‘s lead writer, guitarist/singer Brian Tashima, is an award-winning young-adult sci-fi/fantasy author who has published four novels and multiple nonfiction magazine articles. Jenny Ho, the series’ artist, has prior credits that include not only Glorified issue #1 but also work on a manga published by Joint Publishing HK.

The series originated as a companion piece to a concept album, also titled Glorified, whose twelve songs each correspond to an issue in the first volume of the series. Issue #1 (“Eye of the Needle”) was released in mid-2019, and issue #2 (“Ragged Town”) is currently in production. All twelve issues have been scripted and storyboarded. Along with more ideas in development, the creators are hoping to continue the works beyond this.

Final thoughts

First of all, Glorified is a solid opening to a new series. It lines up interesting world-building, solid
artwork and, enough questions to keep a reader wanting more.
4 stars.
