Cosplay is a big part of many people’s lives, allowing them a chance to step into someone else’s shoes and escape from everyday life. With the rise of conventions sweeping the world, Cosplay is becoming something more and more people are getting into. As a result of this, communities of cosplayers are sprouting up. Some who meet up at different Cons to band together as a ‘Star Wars’ garrison or meeting at a movie release to be ‘The Avengers’. Something that is incredible about Cosplay is the level of detail that goes into the costumes, some spending hours and hours on working out the perfect colours, textiles and even going so far as to include advanced electronics!
We have asked a series of questions to each cosplayer in the hope that we can provide you all with some ideas on how to get started or some tips on how to develop your own craft further!
On this edition of Let’s Talk Cosplay we talk to Nate, 25 from Nottingham, UK.
- How long have you been Cosplaying?
I started in 2008 so 10 years
- What inspired you to get started?
I’d started watching people on youtube make cosplay skits and I thought that it was a really good idea then my parents reminded me that I used to dress up as Link from Legend of Zelda with a robin hood kit or Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing when I was like 8 and my Nanna said she’d teach me to sew so youtube and a family effort?
- What would you say has been your biggest challenge to date?
Working with craft foam, oh my goodness that stuff is not my friend, I had to get help on that one. Oh and mastering my sewing machine.
- Which is your favorite Cosplay you have done so far?
Probably Riku from Prince of Stride, it was one of those that I did on a little bit of a oh I’ve just watched this anime and I love it, I wore it out at a con in America and it got some attention., that and it was just so comfortable even with the late night run to target to get some shorts.
- What has been your favorite Cosplay interaction you’ve had at a convention?
I once went to MCM as Stiles from Teen Wolf and went to meet the guy who plays Liam in Teen Wolf, I walk into the place to get photos done and I’m greeted by “Hey Stiles.” Later I go to get his autograph and he starts talking to me about ships and even pulls out his phone to show me some photos of stuff.
- What, if any, difficulties have you encountered?
I think for me getting used to the crowds at some of the bigger cons and not letting what others think of your cosplay really get to you. I’ve had that in the past and it nearly put me off so I’m glad I’ve kept going.
- If you are happy to share, what future Cosplay do you have planned?
I’m planning on bringing my Sora from Kingdom Hearts back with the new game coming out. I’m also working on Prompto from Final Fantasy XV.
- What advice would you give to someone looking to get started?
Don’t let anyone get you down, if you want to do it do it, no matter which cosplay, if you make it or buy it, have fun and be you.
- What items/ tools/ techniques would you say are imperative in a new Cosplayers tool kit?
A hot glue gun, sewing machine and wig head – without these I don’t think I’d get half my cosplays done!!!
Big thanks to Nate to sharing with us his thoughts and experiences as he goes on his cosplay journey! If you want to keep up to ate with what Nate is up to you can check him out here:
