Okay so it is confession time… I am a total game and comic book HOARDER! Wow it feels good to finally say that out loud! My ‘to be read’ and ‘games to play’ piles are quite shameful, but why have one on the go when you can have 20?! So I am going to share with you my top 6 (I just COULDN’T narrow it to 5) current generation titles, aka: These are the games I can’t stop playing!
The Witcher 3, CDPR, 2015
So first up, not surprisingly, is The Witcher 3! If you’ve been following along with us, you’ll more than likely have read my early article all about my love for The Witcher (The Witcher 3, Why Can’t I Quit You?). It is easily my number 1 game of all time ever! It was the first game in many years, if ever, to really pull me in. The combination of the characters, the narrative, the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski and video game Gods CDPR is really something very special. The Witcher just doesn’t disappoint in any department! This is a title that will always be in the top list of games I can’t stop playing!
I am not going to write much about The Witcher in this article as it has it’s own special dedicated one! But it needed a mention regardless!
Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog, 2016
Okay so something you will probably notice in this list is how many sequels I’ve included in this list BUT do not fret, they are all incredible titles! Uncharted 4 was gifted to us by Naughty Dog, a studio I have been a fan of since day one, thanks to a certain orange Bandicoot! Naughty Dog are one of my favourite studios and I would imagine there will always bee a title from them in my games I can’t stop playing list!
Visually, Uncharted 4 is a triumph. Some of the views look almost too good to be true! They are lush and vibrant and you can just sink into the gorgeous surroundings, especially in Libertalia. Let the disarmingly charming Nathan Drake (think Nate Fillion *swoon*) whisk you off on another larger than life adventure. Uncharted 4 has it all: Puzzle solving, edge of the seat action, love able heroes, hate-able villains and lots of treasure to be found. If you are yet to meet Nate, Uncharted 4 is a great place to start!
Fallout 4, Bethesda, 2015
See I told you.. another sequel! Anyway! Arguably Fallout 4 is not regarded as the best of the Fallout series but in my opinion it would be a great shame to have it missed from this list! Especially considering the absolutely ridiculous amount of hours I sunk into my quest to conquer the commonwealth.. I mean to rescue Shaun.. obviously…
One thing that really sets Fallout 4 apart from the other titles in this list, is the graphics. Let’s be real, it is not going to win any visual awards any time soon, but I was totally hooked from the get go. I explored every single inch of the Commonwealth with my dashing rogue character ‘Max Ammo’ and then again later on with the unstoppable ‘Nancy Ray-Gun’!
Dying Light, Techland, 2015
Dying Light was a wildcard purchase and one I am really glad i made. What a GAME!
Techland combined three things that I knew I loved but never knew I needed all in one title; free running, zombies and electrified poison machetes! One of the main things I really loved about Dying Light is that it is FUN. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and that makes for a really enjoyable experience.
Techland themselves are a dev team more companies should draw inspiration from! They delivered an incredible product with a massive amount of, mostly free, DLC. Even ‘The Following’, which gave us hours and hours more gameplay, a whole new storyline and a zombie crushing buggy, was released for a really reasonable price! I eagerly await the release of Dying light 2 and have faith that Techland will deliver something great once again!
God Of War (2018), Santa Monica, 2018
No list this year will be complete without God Of War! This is my first time tangoing with Kratos and it is safe to say I love him! Give me a reluctant, grumpy anti hero, some snazzy graphics and treasure to loot and I am a happy camper!
The storyline really resonated with me and I felt myself really rooting for Kratos and Atreus and wanted to sit them down and make them talk out their feelings!! I was shocked by the sheer scale of the game! I could play for hours and have only explored an island or a mine, but this is possibly due to the fact that every inch of everything has to be searched for loot and treasure! What can I say guys? I just love looting!
God of War was a delight to play through, horrendously frustrating at times, but a delight. One thing I enjoyed was how mature the game felt, it did not hold your hand there was no ‘Witcher/ Survivor Senses’ no talking prompts, no little tinkly noises indicating you are near treasure. It told you where you should go next and let you figure out the way there! That, I really enjoyed!
Horizon: Zero Dawn, Guerrilla, 2017
Right so this was a top 5, but I had to include HZD so now we do top 6 lists!
Everything about HZD blew me away, from the graphics to the narrative and everything in between, I was in AWE.
I adored Aloy from the very start. She is a strong willed, kind, compassionate, beautiful young woman who, despite being treated like crap and shunned by the other members of the tribe, doesn’t grow up to be the bitter and twisted villain she could have become. No, she grows up with grace and poise and will always help where she can! She is the kind of role model I wish I had whilst I was growing up!
Visually HZD is jus magnificent, I can wander through the landscapes for hours just marvelling at the mixture of nature and machines. The machines themselves are another thing of wonder, the sound design and overall look of them is genius.
In my opinion HZD should have won Game of The Year 2017, it got my vote then and it still gets my vote now! Breath of the Wild pales in comparison to HZD in almost every way! I will champion HZD to anyone that will listen!
So there you have it! My top 6 current gen releases, I have no doubt that in time it will change (I am looking at you TLOU2) but for now I am pretty confident in my choices!
Let me know what you would have in your top 6!
