This game is set in the months after the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider. We follow Lara through Mesoamerica and South America to the legendary city of Paititi. We have seen Lara fighting with Trinity once again, whom she still blames for her fathers death and we’ve seen the ‘Mayan’ warriors preparing for battle. As far as we understand Lara was trying to stop an apocalyptic style event..buuut ended up setting it off anyway which in turn killed thousands of people, wracked with guilt Lara has to work through her guilt and try to find where she fits in the world.

Behind the scenes

Camilla Luddington is back to lend her voice to Lara and to do the motion capture. Camilla has been voicing Lara for 8 years now and in an interview at E3, she and Darryl Purdy, cinematic performance director at Ubisoft Montreal, discuss the challenges and differences they faced with the latest instalment. The pair mention that before any motion capture took place they conducted several table reads of the scripts and in doing so they felt a better understanding of where this instalment would take Lara.

Camilla mentions how ‘Lara looses herself and crosses a line” and how luckily Jonah is there to bring her back and he forces her to take a good look at herself. We have followed Lara for many years and always considered her to be the hero, however throughout Shadow of The Tomb Raider it looks as though that notion is going to be challenged.

We’re being encouraged throughout Shadow of the Tomb Raider to really get stuck into the jungle and the terrain; using mud as camouflage and exploring underwater environments.

Difficulty Settings

Alongside the character changes, Square Enix announced some changes in difficulties levels. The player will be able to have control over the difficult levels of not just puzzles but the combat and traversal. The options are easy, normal, hard and deadly obsession! One thing to bear in mind, you can’t turn off deadly obsession until the end of the game, so choose wisely!

New Game Plus

Another recent announcement led to the reveal of the new game plus mode, this unlocks 3 new paths you can master;

Serpent– The emphasis is on stealth and subterfuge. Take foes down one by one using decoy and distraction techniques in order to sow chaos amongst the ranks. Mud and camouflage let you lash out before slinking back into the shadows.

Jaguar– Focus on hunting and combat, strike enemies with an unrestrained ferocity, focusing on agility, close ranged attacks and knife kills.

Eagle– Emphasis on resourcefulness and traversal. Long range attacks, observing from afar and scouting the best path.

Each chosen path unlocks a variety of rewards that further compliment the play style and the gameplay.

Possible Editions

Right so, there are many versions of Shadow of the Tomb Raider available to pre-order, which I am not 100% comfortable with, I personally find it a shame that in order to get the ‘best’ from a game you now have to be able and willing, to part with incredible amounts of cash.

Standard Edition– Gets you the game.

Croft Edition– Gets you the game, the season pass (which includes 7 challenge tombs, 7 weapons, 7 skills and 7 outfits), 3 extra weapons and outfits, the soundtrack and if pre-ordered you get 48 hours early access!

Steelbook-  Standard edition and 3 artcards.

Digital Croft- Same as physical Croft but with skills boosters.

Digital Delux- Game, additional weapons and outfit, soundtrack and pre order grants 48 hours early access.

The Ultimate- Steelbook with season pass, 3 additional weapons and outfits, the soundtrack, a replica flashlight, ‘terrifying Lara’ statue, climbing axe bottle opener and the pre order 48 hour access.

As far as I can tell the ‘Ultimate’ is only available through the SqureEnix store and it retails are a whopping £180.00!!

Now, if the rumours are to be believed Xbox game pass will be getting Shadow of the Tomb Raider at launch, so that would be worth keeping an eye on if you are considering picking up the latest instalment! I am wholeheartedly looking forward to this addition to the series and we’ll keep you up to date with news and reviews as we go!
