Vamperonica: New Blood

Following on from the events of the Jughead the Hunger vs. Vampironica, Veronica returns to her own universe, still a vampire. She’s not the same, and she knows it. And now she needs answers. But she may not be ready for what she’s about to discover!

Take me back to the dales

I adore the TV show Riverdale, just going to get that out there nice and early. Having watched the show and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, set in Greendale just over the river, I was intrigued by the horror side of the Archie comics these shows are based on. and boy am I glad I did! Archie Horror has a wonderful blend of teen soap opera action, larger than life characters kicking ass and taking names and of course, some solid horror elements thrown in for good measure.

Our friend Michael Moreci, one of the writers on Vamperonica: New Blood, was kind enough to send us a copy of issue 1 for a sneak peak. It was something I’d been keenly following updates for and it did not disappoint!

Hard day of slaaaaying

Guess who’s back with a brand new bite

As I mentioned previously, issue 1 of Vamperonica: New Blood follows on from the events of Jughead the Hunger vs. Vamperonica a cross over comic event, which I had not read and I will admit I was a little concerned I’d end up lost. Some of the conversations feel a little at odds, especially where they refer to the previous cross over, but I’ve no doubt as we go on, we’ll be able to gauge the nuances in the relationships better.  In terms of the action, you are pulled in right off the bat… (bats, vampires… see what I did there?) But the story line and key events from the crossover are retold to us early on so we can get stuck straight in.

Vamperonica: New Blood is full of the campy charm I’ve come to associate with Riverdale and all its inhabitants. It features my favourite Riverdale characters mixed with my favourite supernatural beasties! What’s not to love?

Drama, drama, drama

I look forward to seeing what fantastical, shocking mischief they all get up to. If our lord and slayer Buffy Summer taught us anything – teens will have their drama, vampires or no vampires. The pages are loud, and engaging with dynamic and bolshy lettering from both the narrative, speech and the onomatopoeic sound effects. I particularly likes the notes on the door bell chimes.

Audrey Mok, Matt Herms, and Jack Morelli work together with really strong results, the teens are refreshingly drawn. No hyper masculine, over muscled guys and no barbie doll figured girls. It is wonderful seeing Veronica as a strong female, in pretty practical clothing, not transformed just into an object to be looked at. She is bad ass, fangs or no. Something I really dug about Vamperonica: New Blood is the pulpy vibe I got from Matt Herm’s colours in particular, I love the use of dual tones in certain pages and the use of different textures on walls/ around lights. It feels a bit like a pulp mixed with a Hammer Horror movie? I’m diggin’ it

Pulp and Hammer Horror

Vamperonica: New Blood is a strong first issue that sets up the series neatly and has us asking questions, wondering what will happen and leaves us on a cliff hanger. If you are a fan of the Archie’s comics but want something with a bit more teeth, then this is the series for you.
